Wydman Watercooler [D1 EM]

Post by Warryn Wydman » Thu Aug 24, 2017 7:33 pm

Warryn stretched his limbs as he stepped out of his tent. The morning was bright and... hot. This wasn't the mountains. He could see far with no obstacles blocking his gaze. Weird.

He smiled though.... the troubles at home a far cry from him at the moment. Finally! A tourney. A chance to live up to ganddad. "Ashford, here comes Warryn Wydman." He exclaimed to no one at all.

A scruffy young knight looked up from tending his armour, "It is good of you to offer the locals proper warning. Gives them a fighting chance." Ywain gave a little smirk.

"Ywain! The roosters finally drag you out of the bed I take it?" He replied in good nature, before looking towards the castle. "Aye, perhaps they will. Looking to joining the lists, friend?"

"It is my intention. It would be a long way to come not to but I have yet to decide who to challenge. Perhaps Ser Robert or Ser Humfrey? Have you chosen your mark?" he asked before stretching.

"I am eyeing Ser Andrew Ashford for starters. Seems only proper, no?" He smiled at his friend.

He himself stretched. "The Reach certainly looks and feels different than the Mountains."

"Aye, but don't let that fool you." Ythan Wydman's voice is level as he emerges from his personal tent, still strapping his sword to his waist. "The locals are just as like to kill you for some slight to their honor."

He snorts, "Like any of these sun-touched southrons have any idea what honor actually is."

Warryn smiled, and moved closed to his father. "Experience father?" He raised a hand to wave at him.

"Slept well?"

The Wydman approaches the nearby fire pit where servants work to prepare food. They step aside as Ythan takes hold of a chunk of bread and knife, spearing some bacon and a sausage onto the chunk of bread.

"Experience?" He shakes his head, "Down here they're all too worried about who said what to who to care about real dangers. They never see the knife coming for their back until it's too late. That's why the Vale always has - and always will - stayed out of the squabbles of the lowlanders."

Ywain gave an enthusiastic nod to Warryn's selected target, "Aye, that sounds proper indeed."

He ducked his head as his lord emerged. "Mmm, it is an odd sort of luxury they have of needing to go looking for foes," he scrunched his nose a moment in thought, "I think one I am happier without."

It was the normal thing for young boys, stable hands, to tend to the horses so early. Feeding them oats, mucking out the stalls, adding fresh hay and so on. Yet for as long as he could remember Talieas had joined the common boys in these tasks. It had made him a fine and competent squire, but it also meant he was often in need of a bath in the morning more so than most. Fortunately, this morning he returned from the stables only smelling of hay and oats as he headed for his tent to have a quick wash, shave and change of clothes. It was time to dress up.

"Eeyup, good morn m'lords. Good morn Ywain." He called, nodding to each as he passed. "It's warm out eh?" Just passing conversation. The young Corbray was the morning sort.

Warryn frowned. "Aye, the Vale stays out.... until now I suppose." He was careful... he knew things weren't well off.

"If all they're looking for are foes, well, I'm happy to lend them some." He waved to Tal. "Tal! Finally! Good morning to you too. Slept with the horses again?" He teased his friend.

"Aye, until now." The Wydman scowls bitterly, "Just watch your words among the southron lords. If you die, you die with sword in hand fighting the mountain clans, not some pampered, smooth cheeked child lord."

The gruff man takes his food and sits down at the rough wooden benches the servants had somewhere managed to procure; he hated to think how many dragons his family would owe to this lord or that when all this was said and done. Still, it was necessary. As grease from bacon and sausage soaked into the bread, he jabbed some of the food with his knife and raised to eat, giving over the barest of nods to the approaching warrior.

Lord Wydman, it seems, is in a foul mood this morning.

Tal made sure to show a good deal of respect to the foul tempered lord, slowing and giving a proper bow of his head before continuing on his way. He did turn on his heel to walk backwards while replying to Warryn.

"Yeah-yeah, least I had some female company if so eh?"

Giving Warryn a teasing wink he spins about to dart around Ywain's tent and then to duck into his own. Ywain is given a quick wave as he passes.

"Good Morn Tal," Ywain nodded from where he had sat intently listening to his lord's musings.

"Best to give them some distance then m'lord?" he asked getting up to get some food for himself.

"Eh, I knew you were desperate, but so low?" He winked at his friend, even as a small knot of cold bitterness appeared in his stomach.

He turned to his father. "Don't worry. I don't plan on making foes and feuds, we have enough of that already." He sighed.

"What's our plan?" He didn't partake the food yet. He let out a small sigh.

"First and foremost, you all impress the southrons." He chewed on a piece of bacon, grease dribbling into his coarse beard, "Watch your words but impress them at everything you do. At all costs, we must not appear weak. When the time comes, we must act like we're reluctant to accept help, that it's a privilege we give them to assist us."

He pauses a moment, "As for myself... Lord Ashford has asked for a number of lords from the various houses to speak with him after the exchange of guest right this morning. It seems that Prince Baelor has sent a raven ahead with words that he'd like to meet us - no doubt to hear news from all corners of the Seven Kingdoms."

Warryn nodded. "I'll start speaking to people today. I should hint that there are nuisances in our land?" It is easy to be reluctant for help, but people need to know that help will be welcome.

"I'll also ask around to see if anyone else could use help we can give." He smirked. "I'll impress them alright. It's time for the South to see what a Warryn Wydman can do!"

He let out a small laugh, before turning serious. "Let me know what happened after?" He was solemn. "It's best if I shadow you if I can." Who knows what will happen when they return to their lands.

"Sounds like m'lord wants us to show these southrons up on the field and convince them their skills could use some proper honing," he tore his bread in half and dipped one end in bacon grease, "By killing mountain men."

"Haha! That one stung Warryn!" Tal called out good naturedly just before vanishing into his tent. It was a few minutes before he reappeared dressed in a presentable tunic and such. He had washed quickly, but he needed a shave still.

Food was the immediate priority however.

Grabbing a plate he went to collect some bread, meat, cheese and a cooked egg. Luckily he'd overheard the conversation from his tent so he was able to join in. "I'll do my best to impress these southron lords along with your good selves. Just... if they don't want to hone their skills against mountain folk then is there anything you're able to trade or offer in return?" He paused a moment just as he was about to bite into his bread. "Course, we could just in debt them to the Wydmans with some grand act. Save someone, suitably awe them into wanting an alliance or such." Rubbing the back of his head he grinned sheepishly. "Politics isn't my speciality gentlemen, sorry eh."
