Family Business (D3 EM)

Post by Davelyn Sand » Thu Aug 31, 2017 7:17 pm

Early in the morning Davelyn made the short walk through the drizzle from the Kellington tents to the Wydman tents. Getting a servant or somebody that might help him, he tried to get a hold of Warryn. He didn't seem to mind being a little wet.

Warryn was actually out and about. "Damn rain." He noticed a familiar figure and smiled. "Oy, what are you doing here so early Ser Sand?" He waved to him. "All well with you?"

"It is Ser Wydman. Just curious if you were interested in sitting down and talking about how our families might help each other. I don't know what the rest of my day will look like or yours, so I wanted to see if you were an early riser like me," he says with a smirk.

Warryn waved him towards a tent. "Of course! We're, might as well. Come, come." He lead him into his tent. It was a sparse affair, though t there was a table, and some wine. "Let me get you something to eat and drink. Take a seat."

"Too kind. And by the way, you can call me Dav if you want. I think we've shared enough alcohol for that to be more than okay," he says with a smile, taking the offered seat.

Warryn's shouting finally got a servant to come, and he was quickly dispatched. "Ha! Warryn for my friends... don't call me War, please." He smiled as he sat down. "How is House Kellington nowadays?"

"We are not so terrible. Things are all in the positives with exception of the number of spouses for our Lord," he says with a smile. "To be fair, I'm not the book keeper though. I guess expenses of the Cragfort of late are getting up there, but we still have it covered thus far. And banditry is minor and irregular. Our lands are well patrolled. Not so bad."

Warryn nodded. "That sounds good... I do hope you're lord is not aiming for 7 wives, though?" He let out a laugh, while the servant arrived with sausage and wine, putting it on the table. "I am sure your lord should find a nice bride here... there are a great many of options at this tourney."

"It is made more difficult by the fact that I am not a political negotiator or matchmaker," he admits. "But how about things in Old Peake? You have mentioned the mountain men. But is everything else going well?"

Warryn frowned. "Dav, you are an honorable man, so I will be forthright." He sighed. "Things are not well for us. The mountain clans are numerous and savage. We can fight them back, but we'd need some help." He spread his hand. "In return... well, I am not sure what kind of wife your lord is looking for exactly."

"From the meeting he had and how I saw him react there? I think he wants a friendly wife more than a lover from his spouse. Someone that he would be happy to speak with," he takes one of the sausages from the plate, but doesn't bite into it quite yet. It just rests on his bottom lip as they purse in contemplation. "It is a political thing for him. He does not seem enthusiastic about the whole ordeal. He seemed to like that Arwyn was a fan of riding, reading and poetry."

Warryn nodded. "I can... understand that." He recalled his own marriage, as brief as it was, it was... awkward. Uncomfortable. "Marraige is not something to be taken lightly."

He hm-ed in thought. "So,someone who likes, reading, riding and poetry?" He thought. "I am not sure what my sister's stance on those..." He fell deep in thought.

"Do you think House Kellington could spare some help for us, in exchange?"

"I think that Lord Cedric would likely be easily convinced of the benefits of working together there," he replies with a nod. "It is certainly worth discussing. Potentially if you'd like to speak to your sister about this and at least just meet with Cedric so they might take each other's measure. Perhaps they could speak of the logistics of that with Maester Endrew."

Warryn nodded. "Aye, I'll see about dear sister." He smiled, though it was a bit forced. "A meeting would be worth it, in my opinion."

He leaned back. "And we would appreciate if some Kellington forces could be spared for us." He took a cup of wine himself, thinking.

"I would very much like to see this happen Warryn," he says, tapping the sausage on his lips in thought, before finally committing to it and slipping it between his lips, stealing a bit from the end.

"And to be honest, I wouldn't mind the opportunity to visit myself, even if it was just to initially escort any forces that we might come to agree to."

"I'd be looking forward to your visit, Dav." He smiled. "Good fighters and better comrades are always appreciated. Speaking of marriage..." He put the sausage down, and took a gulp of wine. "Met any ladies that you fancy?"

That shift in topic set him back for a moment, because he hadn't been expecting it. "I... so..." He pauses to compose his thoughts on the matter, Kaliya running through his mind now. Their afternoon at the bar, their evening together, their conversation yesterday morning, and the fear that he may have screwed things up with her even though he cared for her.

"As far as marriage is concerned, that is a difficult thing. As a bastard, I would be expected to join another house if it was arranged, which means I would likely not be serving my oath to Lord Kellington, my reason for coming north. In a way that would be failing uncle Maron's request that I work towards good relations between the Stormlands and Dorne." He sighs at the thought of that.

"As far as fancying any ladies. I have one lady of particular interest, but not being the most charming of speakers, I suspect I may have put her off. We are very different people. I hope that it isn't the case, but I will have to simply wait to see what happens. Last we spoke she walked away on uncertain terms."

Warryn nodded. "That is what I like about you Dav, you're an honorable and loyal man. Don't forget though... we often marry for politics, but that's not always the best decision." He showed a melancholy smile, before drinking some more wine.

"You're charming enough, don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Honor has a charm in and of itself. If you'd like, I can try talking to this mystery woman? I have some experience with similar operations.... Maiden knows talking Tal up can be a challenge sometimes."

"I think that with her it is going to take a personal effort. Lady Kaliya... she's a very determined woman. I think trying to pursue her while she's trying to make a decision for herself would only push her further away," he says with a nod. "But I thank you for the offer."

"And I also thank you for your kind words. But you yourself outshine me Warryn. I can't imagine a better man to be able to have these discussions with."

Warryn smiled. "You're kind to me Dav, I'm just someone trying to learn how to be a good lord." He sighed. "I wasn't supposed to lead. I was supposed to fight, and now..." He shrugged. "I need to learn. I need to be good, for my House, for my men. It's.. daunting sometimes."

He leaned back, and looked up. "I was traning to be a tourney knight. I dreamt of winning every battle, every joust, taking glory home, reliving my grandfather's victories."

"I think that more important than anything else, you recognize what you need to do. And are doing it to the best of your abilities. As much as you might think I am honorable... it is just plain easier for me to be so. I do not have the demands, the expectations that you do. For me, my dream is to serve as best I can. But you, you have to lead despite that you wished to pursue something else in life. You may not think of it this way, but you have already personally sacrificed for your family and your people," he reassures the Wydman heir with a smile. "I will likely never have the opportunity to do so like you have. My lot as a bastard grants a bit of freedom, but means I also won't be able to help as many people as you will be able to."

Warryn smiled. "The advantages of bastardhood! Not many espouse it." He tapped his cup on the table. "It must have been difficult, growing up." Warryn leaned back, looking away for a second. "Sometimes I wish for Jon to be back. He is, was, tough, brave inspiring." Warryn shrugged. "I'm just playing at being at this, trying my best."

He sighed. "Alas, my House might need more."

"Well, the Dornish view bastards differently. Growing up was easy, leaving the palace at Sunspear was hard. Choosing to go somewhere that disdains bastardy," he says with a shrug. "But life should have it's challenges. It makes us stronger and more capable, just as I'm sure that your role will for you. The fact that you view it as a duty rather than a privilege means that you will be more apt to doing well. Have faith in yourself Warryn. I do, and I'd be willing to bet your people do to."

"That means a lot Dav. You're the kind of guy who doesn't give faith like that easily. "It doesn't sound easy.... what did Lord Kellington say when he met you?" His voice was curious as he asked.

"Not much, but that is understandable. A Dornish bastard comes to his doorstep and offers his service? Even if it was to honor his brother, it does not change the fact that I did not personally know any Kellington. I imagine he had doubts." He takes a sip of wine before continuing. "I hope that I have dispelled those doubts and that I will be able to prove myself a capable knight to him. Thus far, I've not performed any service that a trained warrior would be capable of. That is why I began practicing for tourneys, to see if I might be able to bring honor and glory to the House at the lists."
