[LA D2] Observing the Squires' Joust

Post by Maester Oswell » Mon Aug 28, 2017 4:20 am

Oswell knew that his Lord's heir would be taking part today and so he made his way to the lists to observe and, heavens forbid, had his healing kit on hand just in case.

From the setup, he knew they weren't facing live opponents, but it wouldn't be the first time someone took a nasty tumble from a steed, even in such a basic exhibition.

Kaliya wondered if Kevan's embarrassment at being relegated to the Squire's Joust or his determination to prove his worth would win the man's head this afternoon. She would support the Lord heir with her presence, if not not vocally; the sheer fabric of her dress, the colour of the spring sunshine, fluttering and floating on the breeze as she made her way through the stands. She nodded to Maester Oswell before finding a seat.

For yet another reason, Oswell was grateful to the sun shining brightly this day. Firstly for keeping his bones warm, secondly for the heavenly silhouette that Kaliya afforded in the almost see through dress when the sun sat behind her.

He returned the Dornish girl's acknowledgment as a sweat broke out on his brow having very little to do with the weather.

Allard came to observe the joust, ofcourse. He was a knight and he was going to participate. Investigation was also part of what one should do, observe how well trained are your possible rivals and try to formulate a strategy on the long term. The squires' joust was also part of the tournament and from there a possible rival could appear.

The place was already crowded but he encountered a place where to sit by sheer luck. In the nearby he could see an oldman, most likely a maester with all his chains, and an imposible to not notice, very lightly dressed, dornish girl. In any case, it was not honorable of him that his eyes lingered too long on the damsel so he instead focused on the joust.

One of the gentlemen that Oswell happened to be seated next to was paying very close attention to the preparations on the field. Most of the world was outside of his attention right now. He seemed to be lost in thought about something.

"A copper for your thoughts young Ser?" Oswell posed to his pondering neighbour.

"It's too fine a day to be so deep in thought at such a spirited event. Even for an old coot like me, let alone one as young as yourself."

"Ah," Davelyn replies, turning to his neighbor. "Concerns of the House."

"Apologies, I am Ser Davelyn Sand, sworn knight of Lord Cedric Kellington. A pleasure." His features were still mostly in thought, but he did seem pleasantly disposed to conversation.

A wicked grin crossed Oswell's face before bombarding the young knight to ascertain the man's composure.

"Maester Oswell, sworn to House Dunn." The elder introduces himself in response. "So how is my nephew treating his Dornish knight?"

It surprised him, and his eyebrows raised at the realization. But he didn't quite double take or stutter at it. It was simply the coincidence of such a meeting.

"He is treating me quite fairly Maester Oswell," he replies giving the man a warm smile. "I only hope that I can live up to my own expectations to serve him and the house. I think they are higher than anyone else has for me at this point."

"Glad to hear it. Your Lord may be only a few years younger than I, but to my regret we were never really close. It is good to know that he seems to be providing a good example to those beneath him."

Oswell spares a glance toward the lists and sees no one ready to joust just yet, so turns his attention more fully towards Davelyn.

"So how does one of your parentage come to serve a Lord of the Stormlands? If you don't mind my asking."

He nods. "I am certain that you are quite familiar with the story and sacrifice of Jerome Kellington," he says with a serious tone, respectful of the man. "I trained as a knight under a man that served King Daeron at that battle, one Sir Thaudrey. I heard the story of Jerome's bravery which inspired me to become a knight as well. And eventually when I earned that title I came north with Prince Maron's blessing, to Cragfort, and swore my service to House Kellington in honor of Jerome Kellington who gave his life for my great uncle Oberyn Martell."

Arwyn, dressed in a curve-hugging, belted wrap with a light and airy skirt, is also attending, observing the Squire's Joust. There were a few people competing that she was interesting in the progress of... Her brother, Kevan... possibly one other person, but she didn't know their name. She moves gracefully through the stands, also nodding with a smile to the people she knew before turning her attention to the joust.

Searching for a seat himself the young knight spots the Dornish lady from the evening before. His eyebrows lift in pleased recognition and he shifts direction to move her way. However, rather than help himself to a nearby seat immediately he pauses nearby and offers her a polite yet flourishing bow.

"A pleasure to see you again Lady Kaliya. May I join you this fine afternoon?"

Oswell nodded. "One of my few true regrets was not being able to help my brother in his hour of need. I was away on a research project in Lys when the Rebellion happened, I had no idea what was going on until I got back a handful of years ago."

"I salute your honor Ser Davelyn, to my late brother's memory and the house you now support."

"So does House Kellington have a participant taking part in this event? Lord Dunn's heir will be riding soon. He is hoping to impress a Knight enough for them to consider honoring him with their sponsorship." Oswell asks politely.

Davelyn wouldn't be Oswell's first choice for bestowing Kevan's knighthood, but as the sailors often said - any port in a storm.

"We do not," he replies shaking his head. "I've met Kevan Dunn, yesterday riding in the fields, along with Wylla Terrick. We had a pleasant conversation. But if he were to seek the sponsorship of a different knight than the knight training him, would he not risk giving offense?" Davelyn certainly would not have wanted the approval of any knight over Sir Thaudrey. He had done so much for him after all.

"Such circumstances, though rare, have come to pass before," Oswell replied, easily rattling off a number of precedents.

"I am sure that milord Kevan's trainer would be ecstatic if the hard work that he put into getting him to this point was recognized by one of the great knights of Westeros. There are a number of members of the Kingsguard here, have you noticed?"

"Well, I suppose it would depend on the relationship between the two knight in that case," he says with a nod. "It would likely be an honor to be knighted by a kingsguard. But I think that most might consider the word of a knighted Dornish bastard that is yet still a young man to lack real weight. As much as I might respect the performance of any of these young challengers it is likely wiser not to go handing out knighthoods." He chuckles at that. "Though I'd not mind taking on a squire should any show the talent but still need some training."

Hearing the young knight bring up the lack of their competitors twice now in short time, Oswell wondered if there was something more to it.

"And is that something that concerns a noble servant of House Kellington? A lack of...future prospects?"
