[LA D2] The Squires' Joust [Challenge Event]

Post by Rahvin » Mon Aug 28, 2017 4:11 am

The Squires' Joust
A Challenge Event

There is not a cloud in the sky as the steward of Ashford plods onto the field, an open book splayed across one hand. An apprentice scurries after him carrying a bottle of ink with a quill hurries after him, red faced. The steward stops and looks at the assembled squires, nodding slowly.

"All right, you halfwits, listen up." Plummer scans the crowd, "This here is the joust for you and your kind - the ones ain't yet become knights. Now, now - I don't want to hear whatever pitiful excuse y'might have, I'm sure I've heard 'em all afore. But how this works is you go through the course we lay out for you. Me, I grade you in this here." He nods to the tome he carries. "When all is said and done, the one whos wot do the best get my praise before Lord Ashford and, no doubt, the princes. The rest of you get squat." He laughs heartily and the apprentice chuckles along.

"And those that really impress me..." He pauses for a minute, "Well, let's just say I might just look the other way about being a knight later in the event if you were to say... come make a challenge in the big event, eh?"

He gestures to the fields, "Now - show me yer moves, eh?"

Saddle up!
"The first stage of any successful joust is getting on your horse, in full armor. If you can't do that, what good are?"
Roll an Animal Handling (Charm) test at a Challenging (9) difficulty. Gain 1 Joust Point per degree of success.

I feel the need...
"You'll have to ride fast as the wind if you want to knock anyone off their horse!"
Roll an Animal Handling (Ride) test at a Challenging (9) difficulty. Gain 1 Joust Point per degree of success.

...and they're not much bigger than that.
"Now, hit that target. Come on, lad, we haven't got all day!"
Gain 3 Joust Points. Roll Challening (9) Fighting (Spears) tests as if you were attacking at a Charge (-1D) until you've gotten three degrees of success total. For each roll after the first, lose one Joust Point. You can not proceed until you have gotten three degrees of success total on these rolls.

Two birds, one stone! Tuck and roll!
The steward throws a rock your direction, "You have to be fast, even on horseback! Bwahaha!"
Roll an Agility (Dodge) test at a Challenging (9) difficulty. Gain 1 Joust Point per degree of success. If you fail, lose one Joust Point and roll an Endurance test at a Routine (6) difficulty; failure on this roll results in an Injury.

After watching your test, the steward nods, scribbles something in his book, then shouts, "Next! Come on, you lout, we ain't got all day!"

Outcome
The "jouster" with the most Joust Points receives 50 gold dragons and will have a set of custom fitted set of breastplate delivered to their tent in the morning of Day 6 with their house emblem engraved on it.

The houses of the top 3 placing jousters will each receive 1 Glory.

Additionally, any jouster who ends the event with at least 5 Joust Points will be permitted a single automatic challenge attempt in the main joust, able to be used for Day 8, 9, or 10; no Status roll will be necessary for the challenge.

Kevan wordlessly mounted his destrier Tymagon with a confident smile well beyond his real horsemanship, but the world belongs to the brave. The horse... took It without much protest. The young Dunn saluted to the audience. Where his gaze lingered before he shut his beak visor would be known to the lady directly concerned. Steadily getting pace, he charged the dummy, almost knocking it off on first approach and definitely sending it into the air on the second. He did not entirely lose reflexes in the moment of triumph and narrowly dodged the thrown stone.

Now now, I know what you're going to say. A Joust like this is no place for a girl, but that's just the thing you see. While Alessia cared not for the jousting, she wasn't much of a rider as it were, she did need a bit of gold to give her life a bit more comfort in the coming days. Now, with a chance put right out in front of her like this? What kind of woman would she have been if she didn't make an effort?

Unfortunately, the woman was not used to full armor whatsoever. Who the hell wanted to wear this into combat? She could hardly breathe!!

Cassana acted as if she wanted to join in due to her friend Alessia going up in front. The quartermaster offering suits of armor looked perplexed but otherwise gave her the go-ahead to waddle up in the suit of armor.

This is not fitted right at all.

She sighed and walked up to the horse given to her. As she was about to charm it, she distracted herself by looking at the stands and looking for Arwyn. The Algood lady dipped her head and went straight to mounting the horse. The horse decided that it was a silly notion and trotted off, leaving Cassana clanking immediately into the dirt.

She lied there, furious, but knew that it was best to save face. The noblewoman rose to her feet with a jovial look on her face. "That was rather entertaining."

The woman managed to have someone to help her and rode with a bit more grace. She took the lance and by some miracle managed to destroy the target in a single blow.

She let out a genuine laugh and then was struck in the head by a stone bouncing off her back. Cassana took a breath and decided to hold her tongue.

After hearing the song that was doing the rounds in town about how great he was (he wasn't sure about the hairy part) he couldn't exactly miss a chance to show off. Even if it was just the Squire's joust. Of course Marqus wasn't a knight so it seemed like fair game. He died a few familiar faces and gave a cheery wave.

Getting up into the saddle felt like it was his destiny, as the horse seemed to love him and his armour proved no hindrance. He sat and watched some of the others messing around in the dirt.

His charge was only average, no records would be set, but it was in the right direction and just barely fast enough to be fit for purpose. He braced the weapon...

...and obliterated the target in one solid hit! Wood exploded everywhere and he reflected that that never would have happened if they'd been using some solid Ironwood.

Unfortunately he was still grandstanding about his brilliant strike when the rock hit him, and he turned to give the steward a furious look. It didn't do any damage, his skull was too sturdy for that. It just put a dampener on an otherwise great performance.

Still, he manner to find Kevan amongst the crowd and threw him a nod, they had both done pretty well today.

Derrick frowned, he really didn't know why he was out here. He wasn't a squire, and had no plans to be a knight. Still Lady Cassana had insisted he try his hand atvit, so he did.

The horse they brought him wasn't Harvey, and he spent a few good moments staring it down before he tried to mount the beast. Apparently the pair had come to some agreement, as Derrick made it onto the beasts back easily.
Animal handling (9) = 14 2 Joust points.

The ride went well also, they young man setting the horse to a charge with little trouble at all.

Animal handling (9) = 14 2 Joust points Unfortunately Derricks first pass wasn't the best, and while he came close to stroking the target true, he was just a little off.

The second pass was much better though, proving he did have at least a little skill with spears.

Fighting/spears =18
Fighting/spears =21 2 Joust points

The rock was easily dodged, Derrick swaying slightly in the saddle and letting the stone go flying by. Likely to the disappointment of the steward.

Agility =13 1 joust point

7 total joust points.

Post by Martin Tremaine » Tue Aug 29, 2017 12:39 am

It was a close thing. The horse was a bit skittish. It nearly didn't want to let Martin on, continually shying away. And yet, if there was one thing that Martin had learned in his years, it was patience. Carefully approaching the horse, one step at a time, he managed to keep it calm long enough to mount.

That was only the first step, of course. The next thing was convincing the beast to go along with him. Again, Martin proved that where skill lacked, patience would do, and he had enough experience riding to at least get the stubborn horse moving in the right direction.

But only reluctantly. Martin's jaw tightened as the horse only got up enough speed to land a glancing blow, although as he leaned into the impact, it nearly went down anyway. On the second pass, he struck it solidly.

The thrown rock was a bit of a surprise, but not so much of one that he wasn't able to get out of the way. Martin twisted, coming up to regard the thrower impassively. Finally, he slipped off the horse wordlessly. Done.

Plummer strokes his chin, "Not bad. Not bad. You're not all useless." He laughs heartily and the apprentice chuckles politely.

"But only one of your sorry saps can win this little fun show." He gestures at Derrick, "It looks like, even if the Algoods didn't bring any actual knights, they brought the nearest thing to." He pulls a purse from his belt and tosses it towards Derrick, then glances to his apprentice, "Zachary, measure the man up."

Derrick wins.

House Algood earns 2 Glory.
House Dunn and House Forrester each earn 1 Glory.
Derrick, Kevan Dunn, Marqus Forrester, and Martin Tremaine may make a free challenge on Day 7, 8, or 9 for the following day.
