[D4 EN] Words Are Wind [Red & Black]

Post by Rahvin » Mon Sep 04, 2017 5:56 am

Words Are Wind
A Red & Black Event

The wind howls outside; Lofton has long since abandoned his post at the bar but lanterns still burned, illuminating the small crowd in the tables furthest from the walls. Though it seemed they were trying to be quiet, voices still carried in the room - to even someone barely paying attention, there is an argument in progress.

"Lord Ashford promises justice? Bah! The Tyrell is dead and his murderer sits in the tower cells!" one howls, slamming his fist down.

"Waiting for Lord Parcival," another replies, calmer even though he slurs slightly. "None can deny that the right of justice belongs to Lord Parcival - and damned if it wouldn't be treason to deny him that. Lord Ashford knows that better than any."

The first man spits, "That's a load of crap - Prince Baelor can pass judgment! We don't need Lord Parcival. Damn it, words are wind, you all know that! We need action. I say we march on the hold and demand proper revenge for Lord Tyrell!"

It looks like this could quickly get out of hand...

Intervention
The first step is to decide which side of the argument you'll enter on; chooding to Incite will count your points towards the Black while choosing to Mollify will count your points towards the Red.

I am the Law!
First, you need to convince them of your standing - after all, what they're discussing could be treason; they need to know the nobility support their actions or not. Roll a Status (Reputation) test against a Challenging (9) difficulty. For each degree of success, you earn one Incite or Mollify Point (as per your choice).

There's a Precedent here...
The history of Westeros is long and frought with all sorts of conflicts. Surely something must have happened in the past that you can call upon to sway them to your side! Roll a Knowledge (Education) test against a Challenging (9) difficulty. For each degree of success, you earn one Incite or Millify Point (as per your choice). If you have Knowledge Focus (History and Legends), you receive +1B on your roll.

Well, There It Is!
They're still not convinced. Perhaps you can talk them down the right path with some choice words then... Roll Cunning (Logic) for Mollify or Persuasion (Incite) for Incite against a Challenging (9) difficulty. For each degree of success, you earn one Incite or Mollify Point (as per your choice). If you have Favored of Smallfolk, the bonus applies to either of these rolls.

Outcome
The character with the highest Incite or Mollify points will receive a unique Quality that will apply for the duration of the tournament.

If there are more total Mollify Points, this event is considered to have been won by the Red.
If there are more total Incite Points, this event is considered to have been won by the Black.
"That's what I do - I drink and I know things."

Warryn was at the Dornishman when he heard the grumbling. "Oy, what's all this moaning about?" When he heard the trievences, he sighed. "That's not a solution you lot. You think the Ashfords and Tyrells and the princes would appreciate you lot doing this without their supervision? That never worked well." When asked for a specific time and example, he couldn't give one, but he settled the matter in the end, thankfully. "You'll be the ones hanged if you keep this up. Drink and enjoy the tournament rather."

Davelyn was really just a bit too far into his cups at the point that things started up. "Prolly shouldn't be doing nothing dumb..."

And nobody heard him over the sound of everyone using the classic debate tactic of speaking louder than the last guy before he could finish his sentence.

Allard was a man of peace and honor. Lynching was not peaceful nor honorable. When he approached to those that were grumbling he tried to calm down the tensions. But the low position of his house didn't help him and although he tried to explain that this cases had a proper procedures according to the law and historical traditions in the end he didn't make much difference overall.

Perhaps he convinced some people, but for the most part, his words were just wind.

Post by Wylla Terrick » Mon Sep 04, 2017 7:05 am

Wylla Terrick listened to the crowd carefully. Gouren's steely eyes watching for her. The old man wouldn't let the mob so much as inch closer to her, but his charge's own stubbornness was only going to make the mistake worse. They'd wished to associate with some of the possible jousters late into the evening, but even Wylla had been intending to leave just before this scene began to truly manifest. Hearing the words, her face grew into a dark smile as she began moving forward despite Gouren's concerns, the woman would raise a hand, asserting herself to growing discontent within the crowd.

"I am Wylla Terrick, second child to his Lordship, and guest of Ashford's here at this tournament. A tournament which has been plagued by misfortune and great distrust. Believe me when I state that I understand your anger at the situation, and the fears you face regarding the circumstances. For those without the blood of nobility, it can often seem that the word of law is different. I shall most assuredly guarantee to you that it is not."

Wylla could not be pressed to come up with any details, but really wiser men could validate the case. This was a matter of the heart, and justice, after all.

"I tell you not to rage against your masters. I do not support pointless or needless violence. However, this tournament, which was meant to celebrate life and growth need not be cursed by political undermining. You should go, venture to the gates and demand your justice. Force your voices heard, and allow your lords to understand the gravity of the situations and your feelings towards it. There is a difference in knowing how upset you will be, and seeing the masses fury at what should be an open and shut case. However, should you lose control... I doubt my House will move to support or accept your actions. You will be nothing more than an angry mob, seeking to destroy, opposed to a movement of the weak to budge that of the strong."

Post by Kaliya Redding » Mon Sep 04, 2017 7:40 am

Kaliya had been asleep. She had retired early, and now the dull roar of growing rabble was loud enough to wake her. She thought a long time for simply ignoring it, but she couldn't get back to sleep. So she eventually pulled herself from the bed and dressed once more.

The nexus of discontent seemed to be coming from the Dirty Dornishman and she sighed as she stepped inside and looked about. Drawing herself up to her full height, she projected an aura of nobility, or at least one of annoyance, but enough that at least people seemed to be paying attention.

She didn't raise her voice, but moved amongst the drunken crowd, speaking quietly here and there in ears that seemed most receptive to her words. "Since the rreign of Jaehaerrys Tarrgarryen The Wise, Firrst of His Name, the Seven Kingdoms have been united under one law," she reminded people, "justice will only be serrved by that law, not by the mob," she urged. "Go find yourr beds, rreturrn tomorrow when yourr heads arre clearrerr."

By the time she had worked through most of the room, she had created a small wake of calm behind her, a few of the more sensible drinkers deciding to take her advice. Spotting Davelyn in his cups, she frowned, escorting him out of the tavern and making sure he made it back to the Kellington compound safely.

Post by Maester Oswell » Mon Sep 04, 2017 11:25 pm

Oswell tried to garner the attention of the crowd, but being a member of the Citadel, most of the common folk ignored him at first. THe learned man however was quite a persuasive, if long winded, speaker and he bored enough of the crowd that they left the area to seek their fun elsewhere.
Those that remained however saw the wisdom in his words and he convinced many that this was not the course of action, that they should not deny Lord Percaval his chance at justice for the death of his father, after all - if it was their father wouldn't they want to see justice done themselves?

Post by Kevan Dunn » Tue Sep 05, 2017 12:09 am

Kevan was not letting brothel mob to lynch anyone. He wanted Lyonel's head roll more than anyone else but it would be in accord with the law. Letting the mob lynch a Baratheon would lead to rapid escalation, and would have nothing to do with justice. So he stepped out.

"Hear me! I am Kevan Dunn, Heir to the Barrow!"

EN4. I am the Law! Mollify.: 4d6 15 - 2

Having their attention, he didn't really know how to begin. Complex arguments were not his speciality.

"And there's no damn precedent, this is unprecedented!"

EN4. There's a Precedent here... Mollify.: 2d6 7 - 0

"But I'll remind you of one thing: mob does not make justice in this land, lords do. So shut up and get back to your business."

EN4. Well, There It Is! Mollify (Cunning): 2d6 11 - 1

Kevan lay his hand on the pommel of his sword. It was quite effective. Something nothing tranquilizes more than a promise of expert violence.

He did notice the women trying to incite it, however.

Sometimes it was difficult to get a bunch of angry men to listen to someone who was the fourth child of a Lord, never mind a daughter. However, Arwyn pressed forward, citing precedents and trying to appeal to their logical side. It didn't help that she was a little distracted.

Desmond and Walder had taken a long walk after dinner with Warryn and Kevan. The young heir had lot track of time and was now making his way back to the Terrick camp and to bed. But, he'd heard his sister's voice and became curious as to what was going on. He hadn't listened to all of the details being debated, but heard enough to get a sense of the issue.

"When I am Lord of Hawkspray, I will trust my people to allow me to do what's right and not doubt my judgment so quickly." he sighed. "That seems so simple."

Marqus was there too! He told the angry folks that they had better simmer down because he said so. No good example of previous occasions such as this were forthcoming but with a bit of applied logic he was able to calm down a few hot heads.
