[EA D4] A Mess of Maesters [Conclave Pt. 1]

Post by Rahvin » Mon Sep 04, 2017 6:36 pm

The great hall is a mess of conversations overlapping with one another as maesters - and other learned individuals present at the tournament - converse with one another. Finally, the room falls to silence as the Grand Maester Ryon steps to the front of the room and the makeshift podium assembled there.

"It has been some time since we've had this many of our kind assembled in one room outside of the Citadel." He looks around, a slight frown on his face, "I only wish that the circumstances surrounding out meeting were more fortuitous but we have to make the best of what we have. Westeros does not end with the death of one man and, as much as it saddens me to say it, we must continue to press on without him."

Although there is a susurrus at his comments, he continues to speak, "I now invite maesters from across the land to speak of matters."

To ease the amount of posting needed and making sure this entire thing gets posted, I'm going to summarize the three largest concerns up front. Characters attending the Conclave are free to post asking more in depth questions and/or have discussions on the topics after this post and we'll assume they happened, primarily, during the appropriate period of time.

A Sickness Spreading
The first maester to speak introduces himself as Maester Orwyl of House Staunton. He is a quiet, almost timid man but he speaks now regardless of the nervousness that has a hold of him. There is, he says, a sickness beginning to spread among the people of the Staunton lands. Where it came from, he is unsure, but it is a vicious sickness, swift and unrelenting. A man, he says, could rise from his bed in perfect health and be dead from the sickness before the sun sets. He speaks of being entirely unsure as to how this sickness spreads; even secluding victims seems to do no good to stem the spread. This sickness, he says, could be a grave danger to Westeros and the maesters must prepare should it spread further...

A Threat from Across the Sea
The next maester to approach wears a chain of unusual links - Maester Kyle of no particular house bears chains indicating his study of foreign cultures. His dress indicates he is recently returned from the Free Cities, his accent tilted slightly like those across the Narrow Sea as he speaks. Kyle tells of his trip to Tyorsh and of the troubles he has found there - a mercenary company, famed for its loyalty to its contract, has been rumored to be gathering near the Free City. This so called "Golden Company," he says, is made up of the lords exiled after the Blackfyre Rebellion and headed by none other than Aegor Bittersteel himself. He fears that Bittersteel may be ready to enact revenge upon Westeros and may already have friendly agents infiltrating the courts of Westerosi lords...

A Civil Crisis
The last maester to speak is none other than Master Wyllfryd, Lord Ashford's maester. He seems worn out and hollow eyed, as if he hasn't slept. He briefly discusses the events of the previous day and how, already, tensions are rising between the Stormlanders and Reachers present at the tournament. For now it's enough that the camps of the two have been set up on opposite sides of the tournament grounds but he doubts that will last for long. The stability of Westeros is imperative, he says, especially in the face of the information presented by the other maesters...

While not his typical hunting ground, Ferris thought it prudent to listen to the different maesters assembled

As they talked he could not help but frown and worry...Somehow things made more sense now. After the main talks he rose to approach Maester Kyle

Kevan was there, expecting Maester Oswell to attend as well. He remained quiet and attentive, gathering insights presented to him by the wise people of the lands. The news of illness worried him as Rook's Rest was not too far from the Reach, though he was naturally most alert about the matter that was most pertinent to him - the conflict between the Stormlands and the Reach. He wanted to know maesters' take of this. The Golden Company issue seemed distant and a question for the Crown than for the Reach in itself. It mattered, however, in the extent that it all together really pushed any concerns about Dorne to secondary importance, unless this Aegor had some supporters there, and getting across Stepping Stones was probably the easier way to Westeros across the Narrow Sea...

Allard was also there. He in the past thought about becoming a maester, and even recieved some lessons at the Citadel, but the maester's path in the end was not what he was looking for. In any case, he has the utmost respect and admiration for men of knowledge and he listened intently to the different topics that were to be discussed.

A new threat beyond the Narrow Sea, a sickness than has no apparent cure and method of transmission and the tensions between the reachmen and stormlanders, things were not looing good for Westeros.

The maester pauses with a slight look of annoyance then nods his head.

"Of course - whatever help I can be of to you, my lord... ?" His words sound like he's looking for an introduction.

The drama between Stormlamds and Reach was local, or at least Oswell hoped so. It would blow over in time, after all there were always scores to be settled and family to be avenged. It was the way of the world.

But talk of this disease, he would be a poor servant of House Dunn if he didn't learn all he could and try to help stem its spread in any way possible.

"Maester Orwyl, a moment if you will?"Oswell enquired as he wheeled up towards the recent speaker. The silver in his chain highly visible.

Orwyl turns, hair shifting slightly as he did. He sees the glint of silver chain and relaxes slightly, "Ah, Maester - of course I have a moment." He pauses for a moment, "I'm sorry, I'm not sure we've met before."

"I believe you are correct. I spent a good portion of my years across the Narrow Sea studying the diseases and ailments of those foreign lands, in preparation for the inevitable day when they find their way to our shores."

He extends a hand in greeting, belatedly finding hhis manners. "I'm Oswell, Maester of House Dunn. I was hoping to probe you a little further about this potential epidemic." He enquired in a soft voice trying to avoid stirring up fears in the unknowledgable that were for some reason admitted to this normally secretive event.

"Oswell, is it? I apologize, the name is not familiar to me." He gives a bit of a smile.

"From across the Narrow Sea? Do you truly believe that's where this sickness might have come from... if it has... perhaps there is someone who knows how to treat it. Lord Staunton is greatly concerned - many of his people have already succumbed to it and every time we think it's passed..." He frowns.

"I can't be certain from second hand accounts, no matter how credible and reliable the source." He offers Orwyl a bow of respect.

"The possibility cannot be ignored however, especially if it is confounding most of our normal treatments and techniques."

Kaliya had been there from the beginning. But she was stealthier than one might expect from a Dornish woman with a neckline plunging to reveal her navel.

Derrick was at the conclave, as boring as he might find it. The ink y part really catching his interest, was the part about potentially invading armies.

Of course he made note about the disease as well, but with no idea where the Stuanton lands were, he had no idea what to make of it.

Honestly most of the reasons he was here wasn't to observe the conclave though. The young solider was curious who might attend it.
